December, 1999: At the Sighetu Maramatiei Winter Festival, the Dracs come out with their animal inspired masks, and the village performance groups came out in full costume.
But the Dracs are not just costumed attractions here. They represent the devil, kids heckle them with snowballs and firecrackers, then the Dracs fight back with horse whips and physical treatment.
The kids send the gunpowder bombs flying at everyone: soldiers, bystanders and horses.
At some age, boys go from heckling the Dracs to joining them.
Santa Claus is called Mosh Cratchun here, but he dresses in a way that's easy to recognize.
The parade was long and crowded. Each group stopped in front of the Mayor and gave a small performance.
Costumes ranged from the pagan to the medieval.
