October 4, 1997
We met on a dance floor,
the same floor on which we were married.
Our wedding celebration embraced many aspects of our lives: music, dance and seeking the Spirit.
Our marriage ceremony was in the Quaker tradition. A silent meeting for worship was held where those who felt moved to speak did so.
As is traditional, no third person pronounced us husband and wife. We gave ourselves to each other in the presence and witness of the Meeting, asking the divine Spirit to give our union special significance. After exchanging our vows and rings, we signed a marriage certificate. The meeting continued in worship until it was closed by ourselves. Everyone present was asked to sign the marriage certificate.
After the ceremony, we had a pot-luck dinner reception, another tradition of Quakers and Dancers alike. There was traditional Irish music and places for children to play.
Following dinner, we hosted a Contra Dance where additional members of the Richmond Contra Dance community joined us in celebration. There was music for waltzing and International Folk Dancing as well.
